Why Are So Many Pro Surfers Going Vegan?

If you’re in the know, you might see a lot of our favourite world tour pro surfer posting more pictures of smoothie bowls and hashtagging the words vegan in their Instagram post. You might not really care or even bother what these pro surfers eat, but over the last few years, there has been a real change in the way we eat especially in the surf world.

The big Vegan tag isn’t only for hipster and animal rights activists who want to jump on the bandwagon of today’s what’s a hot topic, are a legitimate lifestyle and diet change that is giving these pros the edge in performance and recovery that’s backed up by modern science.

So, if you were thinking about improving you airs or working on your rail game maybe the fuel that you eat could have the answer.

The King Vegan Kelly Slater

Kelly Slater the 11-time world champ of surfing has always been known for eating pretty healthy, and if you watch any interview with him talking about food by god he knows a lot about health and nutrition. But more recently on Kelly’s social media channels, he has been talking about his adoption of a vegan (plant-based diet) in the videos the 11-time world champion said: “I haven’t had milk for probably 20 years now.”  And for good reason for those of you that follow Kelly he talks out about the ethical problems with drinking milk and eating other dairy products and has always been opposed to eating most animal products and prefers getting his protein from things like chia and plants.

 John John

Yep the now 2 time back to back world champ is pretty much living of a plant-based diet and if John John has got enough energy to win world championships then I think it’s probably good enough for me and you John John said “I’ve become increasingly aware of food and its effects on the human body. All signs point to the idea that a plant-based diet is far superior to that of high animal-product intake.” When you a pro surfer looking for any edge you can get maybe having that extra energy or less inflammation post surf is allowing John to find that extra gear and win competitions.

Alana has been the pin up girl for Ripcul and with her killer surf style and gorgeous looks who wouldn’t want to live Alana life. Being aware of her footprint in the world as well as super conscious about her health and the food she eats Alana has been eating this way for years and know with her hubby jack and their baby they will be living the ultimate vegan surfer family Alana said “One of the reasons I am vegan is because I love animals so much and could never even imagine hurting one.”

Rob Machado

One of surfing most iconic and most loved soul surfers Rob Machado is one surfer you probably love for his laid-back approach to surfing and his love of all the fish shapes in surfboards. But one thing you might not know about Rob is that he’s been predominantly a plant-based diet for most of his life rob said “I was raised a vegetarian so I was always aware of environmental issues. There wasn’t a whole lot of vegetarians around in the 80s—so we were ahead of the curve in that way.” Obviously, rob know better than most the massive effect that animal agriculture has on the environment from ocean dead zones from animal waste to dumping of toxic water quality from runoff farms. As a surfer that’s hugely affecting your health on a daily basis. And going plant-based means you eat about 90 or so fewer animals a year so 90 lives saved means that you also don’t contribute to the system that is destroying the planet.

Jack Freestone

jack being from a classic auzy background was raised on meat and a typical diet a lot of surfers might relate to. Since meeting Alana he has seen the light and become fully fledged plant based not only for potential health benefits but for ethical reasons do.

Tia Blanco

If you follow surfing younger scean or the ISA then you might know of a pretty promising surfer called Tia Blanco she won her 2nd gold medal at the (ISA) International Surfing Association world cup and is set to be heading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were she will compete in the first Olympic surfing event in history. Tia has been vegetarian since birth but made the change to go vegan because of ethical reasons Tia said “I went vegan for the animals. I love them all and I don’t want to eat my friends.” She’s also has an online YouTube channel were she talks all things vegan and also shows you what she’s eating day to day.

Tia contributes a lot of her success to a vegan diet obviously making it easy to stay lean and health but also helping her to lose the fat, gain muscle and have loads more energy. Is there anything a vegan diet can’t do

Tia Also said in an interview with teen vogue “I love animals too much to contribute to … suffering,” “From an environmental standpoint, animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.” And Tia we are totally with you.

As a surfer doing our part to keep the oceans healthy is massive guardians of the sea and to have a huge affect it only requires that I don’t eat animal products then I’m all in with you.

Hunting for Waves With The Predator Surfboard

Hunting for Waves With The Predator Surfboard

The Predator is our ultimate wave catching board in almost any size wave. It can be surfed in knee high waves to well overhead fully barreling surf and still paddle like an absolute dream helping you get in earlier in the big stuff and plane quicker in small waves. This makes it our top pick as a travel board that can be surfed anywere. No matter what the day or conditions this board is going to thrive whatever you throw at it.
The Predator is one of our favourite allrounders and one of our best-selling surfboard. It’s designed with the perfect balance of high-performance features and modern comfort.

It has a progressive hybrid outline that is shorter, wider and thicker than your average surfboard. Its got plenty of volume and width upfront under your chest, which is then pulled back into a more refined rounded pin tail, giving the board a really unique riding style.

The volume up-front gives it that ease of use when paddling and pumping down the line, whilst the pulled in tail keeps it smooth, fast and responsive allowing you to be more agile in tighter sections of bigger waves.

It’s got a super flat rocker throughout with a little more lift in the nose to help take on the bigger drops, whilst the added extra foam under the chest area really improved paddling speed and catching waves.

Its widest point is a little further up the board than most conventional shortboards allowing for a wider nose and width that is carried through the entire board giving great speed on any size wave.

It’s gradually pinched down into a foiled rounded pintail, giving less volume in the tail, so you retain that instant rail to rail response of a performance shortboard. It has been slightly tapered in the tail and the nose, giving it a balanced and stable feeling with a tone of forgiveness in turns. The Boards graduating single concave forces water towards the fins to help generate speed and drive, giving incredible grip in your turns, Especially in bigger waves.

The Predator is a really fun, fast and light all-around board that’s going to give you the confidence and speed in bigger waves as well as the paddle power and wave count in smaller surf ideal for intermediates – expert surfers.

RAPID FLEX

Our Rapid Flex construction incorporates our High-density foam stringer that runs the entire length of the board, providing you with a Smooth, fast and responsive feeling surfboard designed for optimum performance in everyday waves.

Our New Rapid Flex embodies that traditional stringer placement but with new materials to maximum effect. It optimizes flex from nose to tail utilizing the “HD” stringer to enhance the board’s performance on any wave, and ultimately, have more fun on a surfboard.

The Hight density compressed foam has a quicker flex pattern than traditional wooden stringers so you will feel that added energy and drive in your turns, and because of the nature of the materials it will keep its original flex and pop a lot longer than wooden stringers that traditionally lose their performance over time.

The Bull “Small Waves Big Fun”

The Bull “Small Waves Big Fun”

The Bull is our super fun small wave surfboard that sits right in between out spud stick and our motivator shortboard slight more refined than our spud stick in outline but just a tad more volume in the center making it go just as fast in small waves and mushy sections. were as out motivator has a more traditional shortboard shape designed for higher performance surfing the bull use a slightly thinner tail and noce than the spudscick to retain a better connection to the wave and greater manouverability.

The Bull is our most fun shortboard to date “it does all the work for” just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. The Bull is going to thrive in whatever wave condition it’s in, anything from knee to head high waves and especially perfect in those smaller “mushier” days.

The width and the thickness of the bull means maximum stability while also giving you unparalleled paddle power in the line-up, resulting in you catching more waves easier & faster. It has a slightly narrowed and foiled tail, so it will retain that high-performance responsive feel in the turns, whilst gliding over flatter sections with ease. The Bull is really going to make those smaller days a whole lot of fun.

This is going to be a great transitional board for beginners or anyone who wants to downsize from a longboard to something a bit smaller. This board is also going to be great for surfers that don’t surf so much on a regular basis as well as advanced surfers who want that little extra speed, power, and stability in smaller waves. A great all-around entry-level small wave board.

Overall the Bull is going to be Simple fun and easy to ride, we guarantee this board will make you smile. The Bull comes standard as a 5-fin option because it works well as both a thruster fin and a quad fin setups. This board tends to be ridden most often in the smaller surf, but the versatility in the 5-fin setup allows the bull to work in more powerful waves from anything from knee-high to head high waves

STANDARD

Using our Superfused closed cell foam in combination with a bamboo wooden stringer this will be a familiar feel for many surfers duel lamination on the deck and bottom, for a great strength impact to weight ratio and with an impact resistant foam this means far fewer delaminations and better spring longterm in the lifetime of the board, compared to a standard 4x4 lamination our boards come with 10oz of cloth on the deck to resist the pressure and denting you commonly get on other boards.

We’ve all been there paddling out in some sketch or big condition and the set comes we are in the spot paddling with your heart in your mouth and boom we taking off everything seems like it was meant to be and boom we catch a rail or to late or too earlier wipe out and have a good thrashing underwater. most surfers can tell you about the washing machine or be rag dolled about under water but for most this would be maxed 10-15 seconds. In contrast, these top 5 wipeouts in surfing will have you thinking you pretty luck as they boys are sometimes held down for up to 1-2 minutes whilst getting constantly beaten by the musculus ocean.

Wipeout Madness At Nazaré

Well known as one of the biggest waves on the planet, Nazare is truly a spectacle of mother nature coming together with the human spirit and those crazy soles willing to ride some of the biggest waves on the planet. This is definitely one of the craziest waves in the world and you definitely have to be a little nutty to surf it. Surfing this spot doesn’t come without its danger as the video shows some of the worst wipeout ever caught on camera over the last few years.

Prepare you to cringe face as some of these are pretty bad.

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

Sam from SBS boards

What I use and the team around me uses to get our shots. what lenses we use settings and all the rest that goes with taking photos and video for surfing.

I will start by saying im no camera guru. I have grown with knowledge and equipment over the years to get the shots we get for all of our review videos and quick edits for our Instagram channel.

The Basics

if you new to this type of photography/video like most sports photography you will want a camera that can focus fast as although you will be waiting for waves or your particular rider to get up and riding once up you want to catch the action as fast as possible. Surfing is one of these passions that takes place quite far away from the shore and you can get waterproof housings that go over your camera so you can get closer to the action.the king of shots will be talking about will be from the beach where everything can be framed and you get a steady shot.

Basic Equipment list

1: Long focal lens 200/300/400/500mm

2: Vidio or Photography camera

3: Tripod (A Must)

4: Sun Cream, Hat, Windproof Shell

Tamron 150-600mm
Sony a6500 camera
Tripod
Sun Hat

1: The Lens

The Lens may or may not be the most important part of the setup and usually is more expensive than the camera. usually known and Telephoto lenses,
I currently use a Tamron 150-600mm lens this gives me the flexibility to shoot closer to the shore if necessary and also way out back on the set waves. as a basic introduction to these kinds of shots, I would start with a 300mm these can be bought from most manufacturers as a 100-300mm zoom lens this is a great starting point Some shots of the setup and zoom you can expect with this lens (insert images)

2: The Camera

iv been using the Sony a6500 for over a year now with 4k and a good HD Slomo and lightning fast focusing with native lenses this camera has served me well on 2 Team trips for shots over a year as well as multiple other shoots. the mirrorless cameras have an added bonus as they have a smaller sensor size they can also get a further reach on full frame sensor lenses such as the Tamron 150mm-600mm Amount Lens. with the smaller (Cropped Sensor) on the A6500, this lens becomes in effect a having a 225mm – 900mm lens this is huge when trying to get close to the subject. the only problem with this is that a lens that fits on one type of camera and camera that fits another means you need an adaptor to get them to work together I use the sony laea4 adaptor this allows me to use most of the functionality of the camera to its full potential but with limited effect in certain modes (i will talk more on this) the added benefits of this camera, it can take superfast consecutive images at 11Fps thats 11 photos per second continuously up to I believe 60 seconds for the surf it best to burst mode as you only usually want the more exciting bits turns, airs, carve’s etc.

Tamron 150-600mm
Sony La-ea4 Adaptor
Sony a6500 camera

3: Tripods (Are A Must)

When zooming in at such long distances a slight wobble in the camera or lens creates an exaggerated wobble on the camera this is amplified further when shooting in slightly windy conditions. to improve these Tripods are a must, there are two main differences in tripods video tripods usually heavier and have additions support and a bigger video head on the tripod for smoother shots, the weight although seems like a hindrance actually helps stabilise the camera shake more. the Photography tripod usually lighter and less bulky. as camera shake is less important as you are (freezing a moment) in time as opposed to (recording everything). these range in prices depending on materials and construction I would not go for anything less than £80 for a tripod although that may seem a lot to someone starting out a good tripod is a good foundation that everything is built on, for photography you can also use a monopod or even handheld but with surfing you can be waiting around a while, so i would take something to support the camera.

4: Sun Cream, Hat, Windproof Shell

its the things you can easily forget but while standing on a beach you wish you had! Sun Cream – is an obvious one you don’t want to get burnt even if it looks cloudy it’s surprising how burnt you can get. The Hat – something with a brim or peak is ideal this will help with seeing the camera screen or through the viewfinder and reduce the amount you have to squint. The Windproof – while standing still for a while you will start to feel the cold especially when the wind picks up this also doubles as a camera lens cover if you get a downpour of rain.

Alternative Recommended Camera setups

we have a mix of setups in our team canon Canon for photos and also Panasonic for another video angle
Here are the setups and prices highs and lows of each.

The Sony Setup (Video & Photo)

Tamron 150-600mm

£600-800

Sony La-ea4 Adaptor

£200-£250

Sony a6500 camera

£1000-£1300

The Sony Video set up for me is a great setup a bit of work with the adaptor focusing can be an issue at times, but if left in wide focus area has proved most successful for me. the 11fps is great for photos and the versatility of the 4k and HD-slomo is great to see the clip below for slomo.

The Good
in-body, stabilisation helps with camera/ lens shake reduction
the cropped sensor allows me a longer focal reach ideal for long-range surfing shots.
reasonably lightweight fits in my bag no problem

The Bad
Batteries – I eat through batteries like nothing else maybe its because I bought the non-sony branded batteries but one every half hour when videoing,
LCD SCREEN – hard to see in sunlight and upping the brightness just kills the battery faster, I use the digital viewfinder for the best results and battery efficiency
Adaptor – the adaptor is a plus and minus as you lose many useful functionality features from the camera such as follow focus tracking and some focusing modes.
Get Verry hot if used in direct sunlight and recording in 4k can get Verry hot. Pulling the screen away will help this a little

The Canon Setup (Photography)

Canon 100-400mm

£1200-£1400

Canon 7d MkII

£700-£800

Canon 1.4x extender

£250-£400

This has been an incredible set up for photos I can’t speak highly enough at the out of camera shots sharpness and speed of this set up, you may have to play with the manual setting to get it just right but if you are starting out sports mode is a great starting point a fast shutter speed will freeze the action and all water in its place.

The Good
Large range of great lenses
High frames per second shooting 10fps
cropped sensor for additional reach see picture
Lightweight option compared to a fixed 500mm prime lens
Versatile reach close to far-reaching with the 100-400 lens or 160-640 equivalent on this camera body

The Bad
video – No 4k but a great HD colour rendering out of the camera

Some shots recently taken

The Panasonic Setup (video)

Panasonic 100-400mm

£800-£1200

Panasonic GH5

£1300-£1500

Setup Designed specifically for video has in-depth feature for video greater codecs and multiple recording modes for better post-production this has been used in addition to the sony setup as an alternate angle and in addition in case one or the other cameras miss a crucial wave.

The Good
Vidio specific DSLR
Great out of camera 4k up to 60fps and HD 180fps slomo
cropped sensor for additional reach
Lightweight compact option
stabilisation combo of in body stabilisation and lens stabilisation for smoother shots.
Great Battery life
Bright screen easily visible in sunlight

The Bad
limited lenses available
difficult to auto focus in diffrent lighting conditions
